Letter from the Attorney General September 29

Dear Colleagues,

This week, I appeared before the state legislature to testify in favor of a bill that would raise the age of juveniles in our juvenile legal system to include 18, 19 and 20 year old individuals. I, along with the team, stressed that these changes would promote more positive outcomes for our youth, reduce recidivism, and improve public safety across the Commonwealth. My passion for this issue stems from my past work representing children in education cases and a personal history deeply acquainted with the compounded harm and risk to public safety that results from incarcerating youth in adult correctional facilities. Several juvenile reform efforts provide us with an opportunity to push for meaningful change which I know aligns with the goals of several divisions including our Children’s Justice Unit. I want to extend my gratitude to CJU’s Liza Hirsch and her entire team, and CRD’s David Rangaviz, both who joined me in testifying on Tuesday in support of that bill and the important primary caretaker legislation.

Additionally, I wanted to share that the office and the Antitrust Division has joined a lawsuit with the FTC and numerous attorneys general across the country in a bipartisan effort against Amazon for their monopolistic practices, in an effort to protect free and fair competition. Thank you to the Antitrust Division’s William Matlack and Michael MacKenzie for your incredible work on this and so many other important matters.

Wishing you all a relaxing weekend!

With tremendous gratitude,

Andrea
