Letter from the Attorney General August 25

Dear colleagues,

This week the office took steps to promote public safety, both here in the Commonwealth and across the country, and prevent the needless harms that stem from gun violence.

With urgency, I joined with fellow attorneys general in a letter to the Supreme Court to preserve states’ authority to bar individuals with domestic violence restraining orders from accessing guns. Nearly every state in the country has enacted a law doing just that – and we know these measures are lifesaving, especially for the women, pregnant women, and women of color who are disproportionately the targets of intimate partner violence.

This week, I also co-led a brief with the New Jersey Attorney’s General Office in support of Delaware’s commonsense gun laws that restrict access to assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines. In Massachusetts, we know that our strong gun laws save lives, and it is my hope that our collective efforts will improve the safety of people across the country.

Preventing gun violence has consistently been a priority of this office, and we will continue to put gun violence prevention at the top of our to-do list.

I want to thank Julie Kobick, Grace Gohlke, Julie Green and Sam Ades for their exceptional work in support of this cause, and their efforts in collaborating with attorneys general offices across the country.

Wishing you a lovely, restful weekend.

With tremendous gratitude,

Andrea
